This is my “hello world” post, so let’s do it: Hello, wine world!

I’m Michelle, a wine lover from Dallas, Texas. In 2024 I decided to start turning my lifelong casual enthusiasts for grape stuff into…something else. A much-needed hobby? A midlife career change? A series of impressive but mostly unused certifications? I’m not really sure yet!

So who am I, and what are my qualifications? Well, few at the moment. I’m a classically trained chef, but I’ve been out of the food and hospitality industry for a several years. My bartending experience is mostly limited to mixing drinks at house parties and keeping my serving license current so I could fill in for people who called off at restaurants. I’m sitting for my WSET Level 2 exam in January 2025–I’ll be sure to let you know how that goes.

My taste is varied–I like robust red wines, aromatic whites, fine dessert wines, not-so-fine dessert wines, wine cocktails, wine in cans and wine in boxes. I have an appetite for novelty. I have a special interest in bargain and off-the-beaten-path wines, because (like a lot of you, I imagine) I don’t travel, shop, or taste with an unlimited budget.

Why The Wine Fairy? In my day job, I run a metaphysical shop called Grove and Grotto, with a certain emphasis on Fae and nature magic. I’ve been known to don a pair of fairy wings from time to time…especially after a couple of glasses of bubbly. I’ve been writing a blog for the shop for years and years. But work writing can feel work-y–and since nobody’s paying me for it, this project promises to be even more fun.

This blog will include stories from my wine travels, tasting notes and reviews, local recommendations, hot takes on industry news, and various other topics that pop from out of my busy Gemini brain. The focus will be on wine…but I can’t promise I won’t veer off into the occasional mead, beer or whiskey topic.

Thank you for reading, and I’ll wine at you later!
