March 8 is the last day to submit your entries for the 67 Pall Mall Global Wine Communicator Awards! (I know this because…well, I also put it off until the last minute.) The third edition of the awards will recognize wine communicators across six categories, spanning written, audio, and video content.

Being at the Wine Writers’ Symposium in Napa Valley last month prompted me to reflect on a couple of things. One, it’s amazing when writers support each other and share career opportunities.

Yes, wine writing is a competitive field–but ambition can (and often does) co-exist with generosity. At the Symposium, I met some people who have been short-listed or long-listed for the 67 Pall Mall Awards in previous years. Their kindness to new writers encouraged me to think of myself as a potential peer and not an impostor.

And two, even if you feel like your work isn’t strong enough to win an award, there’s no harm in trying. You might be surprised!

In that spirit, I submitted two long-form articles from The Wine Fairy: An editorial piece on wine education and a recent travelogue. I also entered two articles in the short-form category (under 1000 words). Both were reviews of outstanding bottles I encountered in the past year. Both started as tasting notes, then grew into wider stories about what makes an individual wine great.

So, to my fellow wine bloggers: Why not send in a couple of your favorite posts? You could win global recognition for your writing…or even a sweet cash prize. The link to the application and rules is here.
